Windows Defender is a utility that removes spyware and adware from your PC and also offers real-time protection, informing you when threatening files try to install without permission. While all of the standard scan and remove functions are present, performance is sub-par, with scan times being considerably longer than other similar programs. Windows Defender is an improvement over the previous version, with some added functions and interface tweaks going some way to increase the appeal. Unfortunately, the application still falls short of the benchmark set by leaders in the genre. While comparisons aren’t always fair, they are inevitable, and it is in light of this that Windows Defender comes across as being a rather disappointing utility. Apart from the poor performance, there are also some compatibility issues, and if you are using Windows Vista then don’t even consider downloading this, as there are still some serious problems that need some addressing as a matter of urgency. One can only hope that subsequent updates improve on Windows Defender, which, although not a bad utility, remains a weak offering in a very competitive genre.
