For most of us, Zone Alarm was our first Firewall tool experience. Developed by C.Net and redesigned over the years by the massive user base, Zone Alarm is powerful, complicated and at the same time, very simple to use. An abundance of features are included in Zone Alarm and when they are all combined and running, your pc is basically invisible to hackers and other intrusion beasties. Zone Alarm will continue to be one of the leading firewall applications for a long, long time still. I hope it stays free though.
