HijackThis helps you keep your PC free of spyware and other harmful files by scanning vulnerable parts of your system for suspect files, like browser help objects and certain registry keys. All you have to do is press the scan button to be shown a complete list of potentially threatening entries, but, as a word of warning, not all of these are spyware or malware, and deleting them without knowing exactly what they are is a very bad idea. HijackThis does include an information option, explaining why each particular item has been flagged, but not whether or not it is actually harmful. It is therefore advised that you make absolutely sure you know what you are removing before you hit the "fix checked" button. While this does make removing suspicious files rather tedious and tricky if you are not too clued up when it comes to identifying threatening files, HijackThis still provides exceptional performance and, unless you are a novice when it comes to using a PC, you should definitely consider it as a good solution to all your spyware troubles.

HijackThis lists the contents of key areas of the Registry and hard drive--areas that are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. The program is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs and URLs, only the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent, and unless you're sure about what you're doing, you always should consult with knowledgable folks before deleting anything.
